Textile Landscapes

A graduation project by Hanna Dalrot
Bachelor’s Degree in Product Design
Beckmans College of Design – 2013

I grew up in a valley surrounded by mountains. Shades of light, structure of the ground, felled trees, severed trunks, the reflection of the river and the silhouettes of the hills. Nature’s expression, my inspiration, my tools and my creativity.

These elements have formed the basis of a creative artistic process where the focus has been textile experimentation. I have created a collection of textile patterns with silhouettes as an inspiration, allowing the unique expressions of nature to connect with the three dimensional space.

Textila Landskap

Ett examensprojekt av Hanna Dalrot
Kandidatutbildningen Form

Silhouette – Gense/Mema GAB

gense_hannad3_610

Silhouette

The cutlery Silhouette was designed in the fall of 2010. The project was a collaborative project with the Swedish cutlery company Gense/Mema GAB.

My starting point came to be the traditional silver cutlery Chippendale, which is one of the best sellers at Mema GAB. By enhancing and simplifying the edge of the Chippendale cutlery, I have create a cutlery with a contemporary expression that appeals to a younger audience.

Silhouette

IKEA

IKEA

The collaboration began with a two-day workshop held by illustrator and graphic designer Laurie Rosenwald.

Paint, markers, pencils, ink, paper cut-outs and similar tools were used during the first day to create hundreds of sketches in black and white. Each sketch was photographed and filed in a digital archive by IKEA’s product developer for textiles. During the second day of the workshop, the students found out that the sketches were going to be used in an up-coming textile collection for IKEA and that we should design patterns out of the digital sketches. Now there is a collection of six fabrics, one bed set and one shower curtain for sale in 38 IKEA department stores around the world.

IKEA

Produkterna började säljas i Augusti 2011.

White + White – Alcro

White + White – Alcro

The Swedish company Alcro held a competition at Beckmans college of Design in the fall of 2011. The brief was to make an unappealing furniture attractive again by painting them with Alcro colors.

10 of the 38 contributions was selected by a jury and the furnitures got painted and exhibited at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 7-11 in february 2012. My furniture was one of them.
This is White + White.

By simple means, you can create something unique of a ordinary kitchen table and some chairs. The furniture was painted with matt white wood stain with pattern of high gloss white stripes. There is an interplay between matte and shiny in the various pieces of furniture in the group. Simple yet effective.

White + White – Alcro

Ballerina

Ballerina

The cup Ballerina was designed in the fall of 2009. My starting point was to change the classic ear on traditional cups. The cup is made of tempered glass, is stackable and can withstand hot drinks.

Ballerina

Dishclothes – Moomin Characters

mumin_hannad_610

Dishclothes – Moomin Characters

We had a class in Licensing manufacturing in the fall of 2010. The class was held by the Finnish company Moomin Characters – the official body responsible for Moomin copyrights supervision.

The brief was to create commercial products inspired by Moomin. My Moomin dishcloths were set into production by the company Opto Design. The cloths were exhibited at Formex in january 2011 and they are currently being sold in Sweden and Japan.

Disktrasor – Mumin

Snowberry – Design House Stockholm

designhouse_hannad_610

Snowberry

The crystal crown Snowberry was designed in autumn 2012 in a collaboration with Design House Stockholm.

I have been inspired by the snowberry bush and the interesting interplay between the fragile twig, and the cluster of large berries. My form is based on the traditional chandelier where a steel frame adorned with glass, which spreads light. A stylistic and sculptural chandelier that fits in different types of homes.

Back to the roots

backtotheroots_hannad_610

Back to the roots

What impressions are the foundation of my creativity? What happens when I let my creativity take control?

The shapes of the forest become mine. A piece of furniture in two pieces – above ground and below. Stones and rock constitute its shape. The hidden is revealed under the earth, that which we do not see. A tribute to the roots, nature’s foundation of life. Nature, the foundation of my inspiration.

Skogens former blir mina.
